Anyone that knows me well knows that I love art and graphic design. Anyone that knows me also knows that I love music, especially live music!
When approached by Stevens Point native bluegrass band, Horseshoes & Hand Grenades, to design concert posters I was ecstatic! Since I am such a strong supporter of their music, I was flattered and thrilled to be involved in applying my talents to their upcoming show promotions.
Also exciting, was the opportunity to do more “down and dirty” design. That is vague. What I consider “down and dirty” is the opportunity to do more hand drawn typography and illustration. It’s always liberating to let go of the precision of grids, guidelines, and margins that, although helpful and necessary, can seem limiting or suffocating at times.
So I bust out my scratch paper, my finest Ticonderoga, and trusty Sharpies and start drawing. As a child, before I even learned how to operate a mac, let alone any design software, this was my most prevalent art process. It isn’t until I’ve completed the majority of the drawing (sans color at this point), that I finally bring the artwork into the digital world. From there, I rearrange, add color, and whiz-bang-boom! Posters.
Here are just a few samples of the hand drawn posters I’ve created in the past. Enjoy. If you’re interested in seeing any other “Carolyn Adkins originals” featuring more of my “down and dirty design” check out my Facebook page.
